Our Ways of Working

At Futures We Make, how we work matters as much as what we do. We believe meaningful change is shaped not only by outcomes, but by the relationships we build, the knowledge we value and share, and the ways people participate in decisions along the way. Our ways of working reflect our commitment to community-led practice, creating the conditions for people to learn together, navigate complexity and shape what comes next.

Mission

Our Framework

Community is at the centre of our work. Our approach (methodology) describes how we work, while our practice principles guide how we show up, make decisions and build relationships.

Together, they provide a flexible foundation for working with complexity, supporting meaningful participation and creating space for communities and organisations to shape what comes next.

Our Approach (methodology)

Listen → Reveal → Sense Making → Reflect & Return

Our approach is a relational and iterative process for working with people, knowledge and complexity. It helps us move beyond simply gathering information or delivering predetermined solutions, towards creating the conditions for shared understanding, learning and action.

Listen
We take time to understand people, place, context and experience, creating space for different diverse perspectives and forms of knowledge to be heard.

Reveal
We surface the knowledge, strengths, relationships, experiences and patterns that may be present but not yet visible or connected.

Sense Making
We bring different perspectives and forms of knowledge together to explore complexity, identify connections and develop a shared understanding of what is happening and what might be possible.

Reflect & Return
We reflect on what has been learned, return insights to the people and communities involved, and consider what needs to happen next. Learning is shared, adapted and carried forward rather than extracted and held elsewhere.

Practice Principles

Our practice principles are more than values; they are the foundation of our ways of working, how we make decisions and how we build partnerships. They guide every stage of our practice, from project design and facilitation to governance, knowledge sharing and evaluation. For our clients, these principles translate into practical ways of working that strengthen relationships, support better decision-making and create the conditions for lasting, community-led change.
